The World Economic Fielders’ Association (WEF) said on Tuesday that traffic congestion was the second-highest among major economies in the world.
“While we expect the United States to lead in terms of traffic congestion, we do not expect traffic to improve in the coming year as the economy is still in recession,” the WEF said in its annual Global Economic Outlook, which is released every two years.
“In the US and Europe, the two most populous countries in the OECD, traffic congestion is the second highest among the major economies, ahead of only China,” it added.
The WEF report noted that traffic is growing rapidly in China, with an average daily average increase of 6.4 percent from 2016 to 2020, while it is forecast to grow at 7.4% in 2030.
It also noted that China has been the most congested country in the EU, with a daily average average increase in traffic of 19.7 percent in the past year, compared to a 3.7-percent increase in Germany and a 3-percent decline in Australia.
“For the rest of the world, the pace of growth has slowed to a near-zero rate over the past few years, as globalisation and the rise of mobile devices have taken their toll on public transport and urbanisation,” the report said.
“This trend has been exacerbated by the ongoing global recession and increased costs of energy and transportation.”
However, traffic will continue to increase in many other countries, including in emerging economies and emerging markets, with the most notable ones being the US.”
In 2016, the WEB said traffic congestion increased by 17.7 million km (10.3 million miles) and increased by 4.3 percent on average, with traffic growth projected to be at 4.9 percent in 2020.
Traffic in Germany increased by an average of 11.6 percent in 2016, while in China it increased by 20.7, and in Australia traffic increased by 14.7.
In terms of overall traffic congestion in 2016 there were 534 million people, an increase of 1.2 percent from 2015.
According to the WEFS, the most populous country is the US with 828 million people.
For comparison, India has 622 million people and China has 614 million.
